Day 19 on the Trail

Dave called at 7:30 last night, just as I was putting Chase to bed.  Naturally Chase wanted to talk to him, and therefore was the first to hear the exciting news: "Old Granddad" finally saw a bear!!
The bear was eating bugs or termites out of a log, and as soon as he (she?) saw Dave, he took off like a bullet.  I have no idea if this picture is anything like what Dave saw, but I bet it's close.  It was a black bear.  Chase's first question was, "Were you scared?"  Dave told him no, since the bear ran away from him, not toward him.

As of 7/1/11:
Miles today - 16.8
Miles to date - 227.7

Happy July!!  We all have big weekend plans.  Chase heard that Coleman got to spend the night with me while he (Chase) was at camp, so he asked for a night when he could come all by himself.  We designated July 1st.  We both had a great time, especially because we got to play a new game, Lego's Race 3000. We played over and over (and over) with the rules changing every game.  That's the fun of being with a 6 1/2 year old!

But back to Happy Trails --- As you can see from the mileage, Dave also had a good day. He was feeling good, saw his bear, and ran into some people he had met previously.  There had been a lot of commotion around a lake, as a hiking duo, a father and daughter, got separated and the daughter was so concerned she called the EMS.  There are several trails around the lake, and the daughter took one path while the father chose another.  He didn't show up when he was expected.  Fortunately, it was much ado about nothing, as he was well, just slow.

We didn't talk very long.  Dave had a hard time getting the call to go through, and he had no bars indicating service.  It has been great being able to talk to him every day so far.

I mailed Dave's second box of food to Kent, CT, and Dave will probably arrive there Sunday.  The Post Office will be closed, and stay closed until Tuesday, so he will have to hang out and take another Zero Day. Hopefully he will find a nice place to stay and enjoy some fireworks.  Jackie Pryor told me Kent is a charming town so it sounds like a good place to take a day off.

Much to my surprise, a box arrived on Friday.  Dave ordered gold Tiffany earrings for me and requested a 7/1/11 delivery date.  Our 24th anniversary is the 3rd. How thoughtful!  It made me teary.  What a guy.
